Bellarmine Clinches League Title

The Lions clinched the Narrows League title yesterday with their win over Mt. Tahoma. This is the first league title for Bellarmine in Fastpitch since the school made the switch from slowpitch to Fastpitch in the mid-90's.

The Lions still have one more league game against South Kitsap on Friday at South Kitsap. Then the league tournament begins Thursday, May 10th at SERA fields in Tacoma. The Lions will play at 3:30pm against the winner of the 4/5 game played at 12:30pm that same day.

      Kelly McLaughlin walked to open the first.  Alexa Ostrander singled to center to move McLaughlin to second.  Haley Dusek singled to center to score McLaughlin and to move Ostrander to third.  Dusek took second on the throw to third.  Courtney Schwan tripled to right to score Ostrander and Dusek.  Alex DeStephano grounded to third to score Schwan.  DeStephano was safe at first when the throw home was late.  Sarah Sorensen was hit by a pitch.  Rachel Barcena walked to load the bases.  After two outs Kelly McLaughlin walked to score DeStephano.  Alexa Ostrander walked to score Sorensen.
      Alex DeStephano walked with one out in the second and took second on a wild pitch.  Sarah Sorensen walked.  The runners each moved up a base on a wild pitch.  Rachel Barcena walked to load the bases.  Alexis Mendez singled to center to score DeStephano and Sorensen and to move Barcena to second.  Barcena took third on an error when the catcher overthrew the pitcher.  After a second out Mendez took second on a wild pitch.  Kelly McLaughlin singled to center to score Barcena and to move Mendez to third.  Becca Sorensen pinch hit and singled to left to score Mendez and to move McLaughlin to second.  Haley Dusek singled to center to score McLaughlin.
      Abby McDonald pinch hit and walked to open the third.  Sarah Sorensen hit a shot into the right field corner for a home run scoring McDonald before her.  Celine Woo walked.  Alexis Mendez singled to right to move Woo to second.  Kylie Ostrander singled to left center to score Woo and to move Mendez to second.  Rachel Sorensen singled to right to load the bases.  Becca Sorensen singled to left to score Mendez.  Madeline Lilly walked to score Ostrander.  Courtney Schwan singled to right to score Rachel Sorensen and Becca Sorensen and to move Lilly to third.  Abby McDonald walked to load the bases.  Lilly left third early (on purpose) for the first out.  Sarah Sorensen doubled to left to score Schwan and to move McDonald to third.  McDonald left third early (on purpose) for the second out.  Celine Woo singled to right to score Sarah Sorensen.
      Alexis Mendez walked to open the fourth.  Kylie Ostrander singled to right to move Mendez to second.  The runners moved up a base when the ball got by the right fielder.  Rachel Sorensen tripled to left center to score Mendez and Ostrander.  Becca Sorensen hit a sacrifice fly to score Rachel Sorensen.  When the fly ball was dropped, Sorensen was safe at first.  Madeline Lilly singled to left to move Sorensen to second.  Courtney Schwan doubled to left to score Sorensen and to move Lilly to third.  Abby McDonald grounded out second to first to score Lilly and to move Schwan to third.  Sarah Sorensen walked and took second on a wild pitch.  Celine Woo walked to load the bases.  Alexis Mendez walked to score Schwan.
      A good defensive play was made by Abby McDonald who on a 3rd strike threw to Courtney Schwan to double the runner off of first to end the 2nd. 
      Sarah Sorensen started and went the distance for the shut out win.  She struck out 3 and gave up only 2 singles.  She needed just 53 pitches including only 2 (THAT IS CORRECT) in the third inning.
      This win on Senior Day won the Narrows League championship for the Lions and their coaches:  Craig Coovert and Rick (Papa) Coovert.
